A heritage camp aimed at educating Korean American youth in the San Francisco area about traditional Korean culture and history, and fostering a sense of Korean identity as future leaders, was recently held.

The "3rd Youth Heritage Camp," hosted by the Heritage of Korea Independence USA NW branch (President: Haengja Yoon), took place from July 3rd to 6th at the UC Davis campus with 60 participants, including 52 youth and 8 university students.

During the opening ceremony on July 3, President Yoon emphasized the significance of 2023, marking the 120th anniversary of Korean immigration to the U.S. She urged the participating students to learn and grow, cultivating pride in their Korean heritage while living as leaders in mainstream society. Consul Hongseon Yoon and President Jieun Song of the Northern California Korean School Association also offered congratulatory remarks, encouraging the students.

Under the theme "Koreans Opening the Future," Pastor Seokjong Yoo (former pastor of the San Francisco Korean United Methodist Church) gave a keynote lecture, introducing key Korean independence movement leaders in America, such as Jang In-hwan, Jeon Myung-woon, Seo Jae-pil, Syngman Rhee, Ahn Chang-ho, Park Yong-man, and Lee Dae-wee.

Curator Jieun Noh (Independence Hall) conducted workshops on "Protecting the Korean Language" and the "Taegeukgi," teaching the students about the importance of the Korean language and the history and meaning of the Korean national flag.

Students eagerly participated in hands-on learning activities, such as decorating with Hangul and making Taegeukgi pinwheels. A special session featured a conversation with Don Lee, the grandson of Pastor Lee Dae-wee, giving students an open forum to discuss and learn.

Other activities included making traditional Korean house models, painting traditional fans (minhwa), and enjoying K-culture through choir performances and K-pop dance sessions. During the "Time of Resolution," students wrote their personal pledges on a large Taegeukgi, reaffirming their commitment to becoming great American citizens while preserving the spirit of being Korean American.

On July 5, a presentation session was held, where parents and guests watched group project videos and K-pop dance performances, receiving applause. Kang Wan-hee, the Education Director of San Francisco and head of the judging panel, praised the students for their creative and educational projects, while President Haengja Yoon of the Heritage of Korea Independence awarded prizes to the best group projects.

The Heritage of Korea Independence NW branch plans to hold the 78th Independence Day celebration with youth participants at the Marriott Hotel in San Ramon on August 12 at 6 PM.

샌프란시스코지역 한인 청소년들에게 한국의 전통 문화와 역사 교육를 통해 한국인으로서 정체성을 가진 코리언 아메리칸 리더로 키우기 위한 민족 캠프가 열렸다.

광복회 미서북부지회(회장 윤행자)가 주최한 '제3회 청소년 민족캠프'는 지난 7월 3일부터 6일까지 UC Davis 캠퍼스에서 청소년 52명, 대학생 8명 등 60명을 대상으로 실시됐다.

지난 3일 입소식에서 윤행자 회장은 “2023년은 미주 한인 이민 120주년을 맞이하는 뜻 깊은 해”라며 “캠프에 참여한 학생들은 많은 것을 보고 배워 한국인으로서 자긍심을 가진 주류사회의 리더로 살아가 달라”고 당부했다. 윤홍선 영사와 송지은 북가주 한국학교협의회 회장도 축사를 통해 학생들을 격려했다.

“미래를 여는 대한국인”이라는 주제로 실시한 이번 민족캠프에서 유석종 목사(전 상항한국인연합감리교회 담임)는 주제강연을 통해 장인환, 전명운, 서재필, 이승만, 안창호, 박용만, 이대위 등대표적인 미주 한인 독립운동 애국지사들을 소개하였다.

노지은 학예사(독립기념관)는 “한글지킴이”와 “태극기” 워크샵을 통해 한글의 소중함과 태극기의 역사와 의미에 대해 강의를 하였다.

학생들은 한글 꾸미기, 태극기 바람개비 만들기 등 체험학습에 흥미 있게 참여했다. 특히 이번 캠프에서는 이대위 목사의 손자인 단 리(Don Lee)를 초청, 학생들과 허심탄회하게 대화하는 시간도 가졌다.

또 한옥 모형만들기와 민화 부채 그리기 등 한국의 전통문화에 대한 체험학습을 하고 합창과 K-Pop 댄스 등, K-문화를 즐기는 시간도 가졌다. 결단의 시간에는 대형태극기에 자신의 결의을 적으면서 훌륭한 미국인이면서 한국인의 정신을 잊지 않는 코리안 아메리칸(Korean American)의 각오를 다지기도 하였다.

5일 발표회 시간에는 학부모와 내빈들이 참관한 가운데 조별 프로젝트 영상을 발표하고 K-pop 댄스 공연을 선보여 박수갈채를 받았다. 심사위원장을 맡은 강완희 샌프란시스코 교육원장은 학생들의 창의적이면서도 교훈적인 프로젝트 발표에 대해 치하를 하고, 광복회 윤행자 회장이 우수 프로젝트에 대한 조별 시상을 했다.
